From Reactive Trading to a More Strategic Approach

Paul’s Journey

For Paul, investing has been a journey of experimentation, learning and gradually taking greater responsibility for his own financial decisions.

His journey began around the Covid period, when he started exploring day trading after watching videos online. While he describes his results as having been moderately successful, the experience gave him a much broader appreciation of what could potentially be achieved through the stock market.

That, in turn, prompted him to start thinking differently about how his own investments were managed.

From Day Trading to Looking at the Bigger Picture

Paul explains how his investing journey began: “So going back to around the Covid period, I started looking at day trading. I was watching lots of YouTube videos about what people were doing for day trading and I had a go at that myself for a couple of years. Moderate success, I would say.

But what I actually did, it was really open my eyes up to what the potential of using the stock market in terms of growth. And it made me realise that using my financial advisor that I currently got, the sort of generic, I don't know what's it, five six percent that they they try and work to, was falling far short of what I knew the possibilities were.

I started looking around to see what methods of investment that I could use and maybe taking on managing my SIPP and ISA myself. And that's where I came across Alpesh on social media and followed through with some of the stuff that he'd got and looking at his free educational information. And then I actually set up a call with Alpesh and it went on from there to be honest.”

That experience led Paul away from simply accepting a conventional approach and towards exploring how he could become more involved in managing his own SIPP and ISA. It was also through this process that he began engaging with Alpesh's free educational material before eventually arranging a call.

Learning the Value of Patience

One of the biggest changes Paul describes since joining the Great Investments Programme is the way he approaches investment decisions. His earlier experience with day trading had involved a much more reactive approach. Through the programme, he says he has developed a greater appreciation for patience and consistency.

“When I was actually looking around the educational stuff that Alpesh was providing, the free stuff that I was looking at, that was really, really useful. But since joining the programme, patience.

From looking at what I was doing while I was day trading, it was very spontaneous, reactive stuff. Whereas what I'm doing now through the Great Investments Programme and Alpesh's teaching on this is that sitting on your hands is probably the best thing that you can ever do as an investor.

Taking the long, slow approach and being consistent with that, that's really where I've learned so much from it. Lots of other things as well, but making decisions based on data.

Whereas a lot of people that I talk to and explaining what I'm actually doing with my own pension and ISA, they always say, well, that must be really high risk. You know, I couldn't do that. I'd be frightened of losing everything.

But the reality of it is, is that by doing what Alpesh teaches with the patients and making decisions based on data, it's actually quite a low risk strategy. And I get much more satisfaction from it rather than using my IFA as I used to to make the decisions for me.

So it's education and patience are the main things that I'm sort of finding beneficial.”

For Paul, therefore, education has not simply been about learning what investments to consider. He describes learning how to approach investment decisions differently particularly by being more patient and using data as part of the decision-making process.

A Different Way of Thinking About Investing

Paul says the programme has changed his overall approach to investing. Where he previously describes his day trading as spontaneous, he now sees his approach as more focused and strategic.

“It has totally changed the way I think about investing. As I said, in times gone by, in the earlier days of day trading, it was very spontaneous. But now it's a much more focused, strategic approach to what I'm actually doing.

Having control over my money and what I'm actually doing with it myself, I find really, really interesting and empowering. That I'm able to make decisions about my financial future rather than just relying on what other people are telling me is the right fund to be in or the wrong fund, or leave your money there, or it's dropped and it will, the market will come back.

And those were frustrating things for me. So having the ability to make those decisions about my own investment strategy, I really gain a lot from that as the person, but also financially what I'm able to do with the money as well, which is really nice.”

The idea of taking greater control is particularly important in Paul's account. Rather than relying entirely on someone else to determine his investment choices, he describes finding value in being able to understand and make decisions about his own investment strategy.

The Financial Consideration of Joining

Paul is also open about the financial consideration involved in joining the programme. He says he looked at the cost of joining in the context of the fees he had previously been paying and considered how that compared over time.

“So would I recommend it to someone? The answer to that is absolutely. It is a high ticket entry fee to get into it. But I did the maths on the actual joining process, and for me it was probably financially a breakeven point of around about five years, six years of the money that I was paying fees to my financial advisor, platform fees and all those things that go with a financial advisor.

After the five year, six period, I knew that I was going to be in credit. But the thing that it's actually done is given me much more financial freedom. And that's for me is a huge thing, to be able to look back on what I've invested in and to say that I've done that.

To anybody out there that's thinking about joining, if you can get over the initial joining cost, which is not insurmountable to be honest, because the payback that you get from certainly the growth that I've seen, it pays for itself very, very quickly.”

This is Paul's own calculation and experience rather than a claim about what another investor should expect. His comments show that cost was something he considered before deciding to join.

Support Beyond the Programme Material

Paul also wanted to highlight something he says people considering the programme may not fully appreciate from the outside: the level of contact and detail he receives when asking questions. He specifically mentions the support he receives from both Alpesh and Paresh.

“People outside of the Great Investment Programme should be aware of is that once you're inside the programme, both Paresh and Alpesh, they are extremely helpful with the amount of detail that they reply back on emails, and the calendar is always open in terms of having a contact point with them.

But the thing that I found is that if you have a well-structured question that's sent through to Alpesh and Paresh, it's not unknown for me to get a four-page response back to what I initially think was quite a simple question. To get an answer from somebody that understands what the answer should be.

But the amount of detail that you get back for questions that you will ask, I just keep getting blown away each time that I get an email back with amounts of detail and the effort that's put into those responses.

It's something that people outside of the programme, they really won't see until they're
inside it. And I just, I couldn't recommend it highly enough.”

For Paul, this ongoing interaction has become a notable part of his experience. The emphasis in his feedback is not simply on having someone available to answer a question, but on the amount of detail he says goes into those responses.

Paul's Experience

Paul's investing journey has moved through several stages: experimenting with day trading, becoming more aware of the potential of the stock market, exploring ways to manage his own SIPP and ISA, and then developing what he describes as a more focused and strategic approach.

His biggest takeaways include patience, education, data-led decision-making and greater involvement in his own investment decisions. Just as importantly, he highlights the ongoing support he says he receives from Alpesh and Paresh once inside the programme.

From Stop-Losses to 100% Gains

Investing isn’t just about choosing the right stocks — it’s about having a strategy, managing risk, and knowing when to stay calm. Paul, a member of Alpesh Patel’s Great Investments Programme (GIP), has learned exactly that.

In just 12 months, Paul saw two of his GIP picks return over 100%, all while managing his emotions, risk, and timing like a pro. But perhaps most importantly, he developed the confidence and knowledge to manage his investments better than his own financial adviser ever had.

The Power of a Structured Strategy

Paul’s experience highlights the value of a disciplined investment plan — one grounded in data, taught through GIP.

Let’s take a look at the results:

Stock 1: Turning Point Brands (TPB)

  • 📈 From GIP’s June 2024 NYSE Special Situations

  • ⏱ Took 27 weeks to hit a 100% gain

  • 🚨 Sold after a -20% drop from highs (at just under 100%)

  • 🧠 Monthly MACD suggested holding longer — it later peaked at +148%

“Had I stayed in, it could’ve reached 148%. But I’m still very happy with my profits — and more importantly, I followed my plan.”

Stock 2: Sea Ltd (SE)

  • 📈 From July 2024 NYSE Special Situations

  • 📊 After 42 weeks, SE hit over 100% in profit

  • 🔁 Paul’s strategy: sell if it drops 20% from its high, just like TPB

His consistency in applying the same rules to both positions shows a disciplined mindset — something Paul credits to GIP's teachings.

Lessons Beyond the Returns

While the gains were impressive, what Paul found most rewarding was the learning process. Anyone can get lucky with a stock tip. But what Paul gained went far beyond the numbers.

He learned how to think like an investor. How to interpret charts. How to set rules — and stick to them. Most importantly, he learned how to manage risk.

“I’ve learnt so much from the GIP and firmly believe I have better risk management. I’m managing my ISA and SIPP better than my ex-IFA ever did.”

This level of personal growth is at the heart of the Great Investments Programme. It represents the shift from dependence to independence — and that’s exactly what GIP is designed to empower.

Why GIP Isn’t Just About Picking Stocks

Alpesh Patel’s Great Investments Programme is about teaching you how to invest — not just telling you what to buy.

That means:

  • 📚 Understanding charts, trends, and market psychology

  • 🔁 Applying risk management strategies like stop-losses

  • 🎯 Learning when to enter and exit positions

  • 💬 Getting expert guidance, support, and ongoing education

Whether you’re investing through an ISA, SIPP, or other portfolio, GIP equips you with the tools to take control — without being dependent on costly advisers or vague tips.

Emotional Balance and the Value of Education

Paul noted that Alpesh often teaches how investors should not let emotions sway their decisions — something he’s embraced.

Even though some trades didn’t work out, Paul kept perspective. He followed his rules, stayed consistent, and trusted the strategy. That mindset is what sets successful investors apart.

“I realise you give the message about positive and negative situations and how they should NOT change your investing emotions. I believe I am fairly balanced in these situations.”

What You Can Take Away from Paul’s Story

  • 📈 Results are real – two 100%+ gainers in under a year

  • 🧠 Rules-based investing works – Paul applied stop-losses and profit-taking triggers

  • 🎓 Education pays off – he now feels more confident than when relying on a professional adviser

  • 💪 Control = Confidence – managing his own ISA and SIPP with skill

A Programme That Empowers You to Own Your Journey

Paul’s story is proof that when you pair expert guidance with education, you don’t just make better trades — you become a better investor.

Whether you're tired of mediocre results from traditional advisers or you want to learn how to think for yourself in the markets, the Great Investments Programme could be your turning point.

As Paul says: “Thank you for helping people like me make the most of our investing journey.”
