How the Great Investments Programme Helped Ed Move from Doubt to Confidence in Managing His Pension
Background
For years, Ed did what most people are encouraged to do. He trusted a financial adviser to manage his pension, attended the review meetings, read the quarterly updates and assumed everything was being looked after. But deep down, something didn't feel right.
"
I'd been a bit disappointed with my IFA for a number of years," Ed explains. "I didn't really find anything that was an alternative and I didn't have the confidence to do my own thing." Unlike many investors, Ed wasn't looking for a quick fix. He spent almost a year researching before making any decision.
He discovered Alpesh Patel through TraderMind and then immersed himself in the free educational content. He watched YouTube videos, followed social media updates and gradually started testing some of the investment ideas inside his own Stocks & Shares ISA.
"I watched a lot of the videos on YouTube, watched a lot of his Instagram posts and started following some of the ideas... When I started getting the results I expected—and that doesn't always mean things going up, because some investments went down too, but they behaved how I expected that's what made me think, actually, I can move my pensions across."
It wasn't excitement that convinced him. It was evidence.
The Challenge: Knowing Something Needed to Change
Ed had spent his career building businesses. He had started companies, grown them and sold them. Making decisions based on research and experience came naturally in business but somehow, when it came to pensions, he had allowed someone else to take complete control. Looking back, he realised he wasn't unhappy because he lacked trust in financial advisers.
He was unhappy because he didn't truly understand what was happening with one of the biggest assets he would ever own. He also felt the returns didn't reflect what he was seeing happening in global markets.
"I was kind of letting somebody else do it and I just didn't think the returns were right for what I was seeing in the stock market over the last twenty years. So aiming for five percent didn't seem like a sensible thing to do." Like many investors, Ed wanted more than performance. He wanted understanding.
The Biggest Transformation: Learning to Trust Himself
Ask Ed what the most valuable thing he gained from the Great Investments Programme and he doesn't immediately talk about money. He talks about confidence. "I think the most valuable thing I've got out of this process is to trust the information on the programme, but also trust myself a bit more."
That confidence didn't come from being told what to invest in. It came from understanding why investments were being selected and learning the process behind every decision. He also discovered something he hadn't expected, the support of the wider Great Investments Programme community.
"You know, the learning is good, and maybe opening up a bit more to the people around me on the programme, using their knowledge and trusting that the process does what it's supposed to do, that's been a big thing." Today, market movements no longer create the same anxiety. Instead, Ed understands that investing is a long-term process built on knowledge rather than emotion.
From Scepticism to Confidence
Ed is refreshingly honest about one thing. He didn't join immediately because he was sceptical. In fact, there was even a moment when he questioned whether the programme was genuine after finding misleading information online. "I thought, is this just another internet scam?" he recalls with a laugh.
Coming from a business background, he was used to meeting people face-to-face before making important decisions. "I've been running companies since I was eighteen years old. I set them up, grow them and sell them. A lot of it is based on gut feel and meeting people face to face."
Rather than rushing into anything, he simply carried on researching. Eventually, the consistency of the education and the quality of the research gave him the confidence to move forward. Looking back, he's glad he took his time.
A Different Way of Thinking About Investing
One of the biggest mindset shifts for Ed wasn't about taking bigger risks. It was about taking better-informed risks. "The knowledge you have previously is probably a little bit too safe," he says. "By risk, I don't mean going crazy. I mean being more honed in and knowledgeable about your ability to do this stuff."
Years before joining the programme, Ed had asked his adviser to invest in a US fund after carrying out his own research. His adviser was reluctant. Eventually the investment significantly outperformed the rest of his portfolio. That experience planted an important seed.
"When it was outperforming everything he was doing, that's when I said, 'I can do this.' What I didn't have was the detailed knowledge - the Value, Income, Sortino and all those things. That's what adds the value." For Ed, the programme wasn't replacing his judgement. It was strengthening it.
Taking Control of His Family's Future
As Ed's confidence grew, so did his willingness to take responsibility for his family's financial future. Today, around three-quarters of his family's pensions are managed by him. "I started with about £520,000 around eighteen months or two years ago. It's now around £700,000 invested."
While those figures reflect Ed's personal experience and are not typical or guaranteed, he says the numbers aren't actually what matter most.
What matters is understanding what he's doing. "I'm enjoying doing it. I think it's really worth getting control of your finances. They're really important. Your retirement fund is a very important stage of life and I think everybody should take a bit more control of that themselves and have a bit more responsibility for it."
Why This Matters
Ed's experience isn't simply a story about investment returns. It's about moving from uncertainty to confidence. Instead of feeling disconnected from one of the largest financial assets he owns, he now understands how decisions are made, why investments are selected and what drives long-term performance.
He believes that's something everyone can benefit from. "When you've never done this before and you've got no formal training, it is quite a leap for people." But he also believes that with the right education, research and support, people are capable of far more than they often think.
Key Takeaway
When asked whether he would recommend the Great Investments Programme, Ed doesn't hesitate. "Absolutely, I'd recommend the programme. I was a very nervous joiner. I took my time over it and did a lot of research, but it's definitely been good for me."
His advice isn't to blindly follow anyone.
