From Default Investing to Taking Control: Dominic’s Story

Background

When Dominic Bell began looking more closely at his investments, he started to realise just how much information was available about investing and how difficult it could be to know what to do with it. The more he researched, the more questions he had about his existing investment arrangements.

Like many people, Dominic had been placed into a default investment scheme through his existing providers. He felt it was delivering very low returns and began wondering whether there was a better way to approach his investments.

“I was starting to look at my investments in a little bit more detail and sort of realising there was a lot more information out there about investing.” For Dominic, the issue wasn't simply finding more information. It was finding an approach he could trust.

Having seen Alpesh Patel on social media, Dominic became intrigued. “I was just wanting to do something for myself, my family, but wanting to know exactly what to do was difficult to see.” He spent time researching the Great Investments Programme before eventually deciding to take the plunge. That caution was particularly significant given Dominic's own professional background as a chartered accountant and tax adviser.

The Challenge: Moving Beyond A Default Investment Approach

Dominic wasn't looking for a quick fix. He wanted to do more with his investments, but he also wanted to understand what he was actually doing. His experience highlighted a problem many investors face: being invested does not necessarily mean understanding how your investments work.

A default fund can be convenient, but Dominic began questioning whether convenience was enough. As he explored investing more deeply, he realised that he wanted greater knowledge, more visibility over his choices and a better understanding of what could potentially be achieved.

The challenge was therefore not simply choosing investments. It was developing enough understanding and confidence to make informed decisions rather than leaving everything in somebody else's hands. That search ultimately led Dominic to the Great Investments Programme.

The Biggest Lesson: Understanding What He Was Actually Doing

For Dominic, the most valuable part of the programme wasn't one particular investment or a single piece of information. It was the combination of education and research-backed portfolios.

He describes the programme as having a “2-pronged approach”: education for those who want to understand why an investment approach works, alongside ready-made portfolios for people who may not have the time or expertise to conduct that level of research themselves. “The research is invaluable, but to actually understand the background to that.”

The education gave Dominic the theory behind the approach. The portfolios then allowed him to see how that theory translated into actual investment decisions. This mattered because Dominic wanted to understand, not simply follow.

He also found it useful to look back at historical results when markets or individual portfolios went through difficult periods. “If you're not sure, you can either go back to all the education or you can have a look back at the historic results.” For Dominic, having both the educational foundation and the historical context provided reassurance when investing his own money.

Learning To Think Like A Long Term Investor

One of the biggest changes for Dominic was his understanding of his own role as an investor. Before joining the programme, he had assumed that a company default fund would naturally be designed with his best interests in mind. The programme challenged that assumption.

More importantly, it gave Dominic a greater understanding of what he was trying to achieve with his investments and what different approaches could potentially offer. “It's given me a greater understanding of what I'm doing, what I'm trying to achieve, and what can be achieved.”

That change also affected how Dominic viewed responsibility. Rather than simply putting his money into someone else's hands, he felt increasingly responsible for understanding and making his own investment choices. “It's changed the way I'm now kind of responsible for my choices as opposed to just putting it in someone else's hands.”

For Dominic, investing became less about accepting the default and more about taking an active role in deciding what he wanted his investments to do.

A Different Way of Thinking About Investing

Dominic describes himself as naturally cautious, and his professional background reinforces that approach. He was a chartered accountant and tax adviser, so committing to an investment programme was not something he approached casually. His change in mindset wasn't about suddenly becoming reckless or taking unnecessary risks. It was about becoming more informed and taking greater ownership of his decisions.

One of the things that surprised him was seeing investment outcomes that initially appeared much stronger than the conventional “low, medium, high” return expectations he had previously encountered. “Whereas the program, it had some good returns, and until you actually look at it, you think they're too good.”

The important shift for Dominic was not simply seeing those outcomes. It was understanding the process and having the educational background to interpret what he was seeing. That gave him what he describes as greater freedom to invest in a way that suited his own objectives with the backing of the programme behind him.

Education That Thinks Beyond The Course

For Dominic, education is not separate from the investment process; it is one of the things that makes the process useful. He particularly valued being able to understand the theory behind the research and portfolios rather than simply accepting an investment decision without context.

The research saves investors the considerable time and expertise that would otherwise be required to investigate investments themselves, while the educational material helps explain the thinking behind it. That combination was important to Dominic. It meant he could look at what was happening in a portfolio and ask why.

When markets moved in an unexpected direction, he could return to the educational material or look at historical results rather than automatically assuming something had gone wrong. “Just having the theory behind it… is absolutely fantastic.”

For Dominic, the value therefore comes from having both the information and the framework to understand it.

Why This Matters

Dominic's experience illustrates a broader issue facing many investors. The hardest part of investing isn't always finding information. There is information everywhere.

The harder question is knowing which information matters, understanding what you are invested in and having enough confidence in your process to make decisions deliberately rather than by default.

Dom's experience also demonstrates that becoming a more engaged investor does not necessarily mean becoming a professional stock picker. For him, it meant understanding more, questioning his existing arrangements and becoming more responsible for his own choices.

That shift; from accepting an investment decision to understanding and taking ownership of it, is arguably the most significant change in his experience.

Key Takeaway

Dominic’s recommendation is unequivocal. “I would recommend it wholeheartedly.” For him, the programme has provided greater freedom in how he approaches investing, together with the education and research that give him confidence in the process.

Perhaps most tellingly, Dominic isn't someone who describes himself as naturally reckless with money. Quite the opposite. As a former chartered accountant and tax adviser, he describes himself as naturally cautious.

Yet after researching the programme and taking the time to understand what it offered, he decided to take greater control of his investments. “I would recommend anyone else who wants to take more control of their own investments to do the same.”
