Building a Long Term Approach to Investing

From Workplace Pension to Greater Investment Involvement

Background

David Hare had spent many years with his former employer, during which time he had built up a pension. When he eventually left the organisation, he began thinking more carefully about what he wanted to do with his pension and how involved he wanted to be in his investment decisions.

Although he had accumulated a pension pot, David says he had been less than satisfied with the growth he had experienced through the funds he had been invested in. This prompted him to consider a more hands-on approach to understanding and managing his investments.

The Challenge

For David, the challenge was not simply choosing investments. It was about gaining the knowledge and confidence to make his own decisions while dealing with the constant flow of information and market commentary that investors encounter.

He wanted education, guidance and an understanding of how to approach investing over the longer term. That led him to the Great Investments Programme.

The Learning Process

A key part of David’s experience has been learning not to react to every movement in the market. He describes two principles that have become particularly important to him: staying calm and avoiding unnecessary activity. “Don’t panic and don’t get bored.”

For David, investing is about taking a longer-term view rather than trying to respond to every market movement. He also emphasises the distinction between investing and trading. “This is not a trading program. This is about long-term investing.”

The focus, from David’s perspective, has therefore been on developing a portfolio and having the discipline to give investments time rather than continually changing them.

A Change In Investment Mindset

David says the programme has changed the way he approaches investing, particularly by encouraging him to think over a longer time horizon.

His approach is now less focused on attempting to identify short-term market turning points. “Definitely not chopping and changing what I’m investing in, definitely not trying to catch the top or bottoms of markets.”

Instead, David describes an approach centred on remaining invested for the longer term and focusing on the investments within his portfolio. “This is about being in the market for the long term with a very good quality portfolio.”

What David Values

Alongside the educational material, David identifies mentoring and staying connected to market developments as important parts of his experience.

He says: “Having Alpesh alongside me and hearing his updates is a huge part of the program that allows you to sleep a bit better at night and take comfort in your investments that they’re on the right track.”

David’s Perspective

When reflecting on what someone considering the programme should think about, David highlights the importance of being prepared to take responsibility for managing a portfolio. He says: “You need to have the confidence to want to manage your own portfolio, so invest the time.”

For David, the educational element has been particularly significant, alongside the ability to remain connected to what is happening in financial markets. “I think it’s a hugely educational programme. The mentoring support is fantastic.”

He also highlights the value of staying informed: “And the ability to stay plugged into what’s going on in the markets is really, really helpful and critical really for managing your portfolio.”

Key Takeaway

David’s experience centres on a shift towards greater personal involvement, education and a longer-term perspective. His story illustrates that becoming more involved in investing does not necessarily mean making more frequent investment decisions.

For him, it has meant developing a framework for thinking about his portfolio, understanding market noise and maintaining a long-term perspective.
