Chris Humphrey Built A Structured Approach To Investing
From 15 Years of Random Investments to a Structured Approach
Investing for many years does not necessarily mean having a clear investment strategy. For Chris Humphrey, who had spent around 15 years investing through his and his wife's self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs), the challenge was not a lack of investments but a lack of structure and understanding.
Over the years, Chris had accumulated a selection of investment trusts, with decisions often influenced by financial newspaper recommendations, tips and familiar names. Reflecting on his earlier approach, he explains: "I had accumulated a rather random selection of investment trusts over a period of about 15 years in my SIPP and my wife's SIPP.
The investment trusts had been chosen through tips in financial press, papers etc, name recognition, so a very unstructured way of choosing an investment. They went up, they went down, they went sideways and I never really understood what I was invested in, whether they were doing well or doing poorly."
Although he had considerable experience of investing, Chris recognised that he needed a more systematic way of assessing his portfolio and understanding the investments he held.
Finding the Right Structure Through the Great Investments Programme
For Chris, the next step was to find a programme that would allow him to develop his investment knowledge, take greater control of his decisions and still have access to guidance when needed.
He wanted to move away from relying on recommendations and develop the confidence to make informed decisions independently. Explaining what he was looking for, he says:
"So I very much felt I needed some structure to what I was doing. I wanted a system where I could be educated and take control myself, but with some guidance."
The Great Investments Programme offered Chris the structured educational environment he was seeking, with extensive learning materials and ongoing assistance. As he discovered, having access to a wealth of information was valuable, but understanding which principles to focus on was equally important.
Learning to Focus on Company Fundamentals
A key part of Chris's experience was learning to look beyond investment recommendations and understand the financial fundamentals of the companies behind an investment.
Through the Great Investments Programme, he developed a greater appreciation of how to assess fundamentally sound businesses, including examining their cash flow, dividends and return on investment.
Chris describes this shift in his understanding: "On the Great Investments Programme, there is a huge amount of educational material.
However, you realise that you only need to focus on the fundamentals and the fundamentals are that one, the programme is about investing and building wealth over a period of time. You learn how to analyse what are fundamentally sound companies, which have good cash flow, dividends, return on investment etc."
This helped Chris appreciate the importance of understanding what drives a company's financial performance, rather than simply choosing investments based on familiarity or external recommendations.
It also reinforced the importance of having a longer-term objective when making investment decisions, with an emphasis on building wealth over time.
Understanding Market Noise and Long-Term Trends
One of the important lessons Chris took away from the programme was learning to distinguish short-term market fluctuations from longer-term movements driven by company profitability.
Financial markets are influenced by a wide range of factors, including economic announcements, investor sentiment and geopolitical events. These can cause share prices to fluctuate, sometimes without a corresponding change in a company's underlying financial position.
Chris explains how the programme helped him understand this distinction: "You learn to distinguish between what we call noise, so where you get the markets fluctuating at the longer term movements in the market, which are determined much more by the profitability of the companies."
Developing this perspective helped Chris understand why not every market movement needs to prompt an immediate investment decision. Instead, investors can assess whether a change reflects a fundamental shift in a company's prospects or is simply part of the normal fluctuations of financial markets.
Managing Volatility and Avoiding the Temptation to Time the Market
Before joining the programme, Chris was more inclined to move in and out of investments, responding to changing market conditions and opportunities.
However, through his learning, he developed a greater understanding of volatility and the difficulties involved in consistently timing the market as an individual investor.
Reflecting on this change in mindset, he says: "Then the other great thing you learn is about volatility and not to panic. Before I joined the programme, I was probably much more in the mindset of getting into this, getting out of that and it's impossible to time the market as an amateur investor."
Understanding volatility helped Chris appreciate the importance of remaining disciplined during periods of market uncertainty, rather than making decisions based on short-term fluctuations or emotional reactions.
This does not mean that investments should never be reviewed or that investors should ignore changes in company fundamentals. Rather, it highlights the value of having a clear rationale for buying, holding or selling an investment.
Building Long-Term Wealth Through Compounding
A significant part of Chris's learning was understanding that investing is about building wealth over time, rather than constantly buying and selling in an attempt to capture short-term market movements.
He came to appreciate the potential of compounding and the importance of allowing suitable investments time to grow, provided their underlying fundamentals continued to support the investment decision.
Summing up this philosophy, Chris shares: "It is all about building wealth through compounding over years.
A lot of investing is actually about choosing the right investments and then doing nothing. You let them do their stuff."
This reflects a more patient approach to investing, where the emphasis is on understanding the investments held and allowing long-term objectives to guide decisions, rather than reacting to every market development.
Compounding can contribute to long-term wealth creation, although returns are not guaranteed and investments remain subject to market risk.
The Value of Ongoing Education and Support
Beyond the educational content, Chris particularly valued the structure and assistance provided through the Great Investments Programme.
Having access to ongoing guidance helped him feel supported as he developed his investment knowledge and took greater responsibility for managing his portfolio.
As he reflects on the programme:
"It's full of information. It really gives you structure to your investing and how to do it. There is plenty of assistance, so you're not on your own."
The weekly updates from Alpesh Patel were another feature that Chris appreciated. They provided regular insights into financial markets while keeping the learning process engaging.
As Chris puts it: "You get weekly updates from Alpesh, which are always informative and often very amusing. Thoroughly recommend it."
For Chris, this combination of structured learning, regular updates and ongoing assistance helped him develop a more consistent approach to investing, while retaining control over his own decisions.
The Outcome: Greater Structure and Confidence in Investing
Chris's experience with the Great Investments Programme helped him move away from an unstructured collection of investment trusts towards a more considered understanding of investment principles.
He developed a greater appreciation of company fundamentals, the role of compounding, the impact of volatility and the importance of distinguishing short-term market noise from longer-term trends.
Most importantly, he gained a clearer framework for approaching his investments and greater confidence in his ability to take responsibility for his financial decisions.
Reflecting on what the programme enabled him to do, Chris explains:
"It enables you to hold your investments for them to do well and to take away any concerns about you not doing the right thing."
His experience illustrates the value of having an investment process that is supported by education, guidance and an understanding of risk, rather than relying solely on tips or reacting to market movements.
